Reading Science Center Awarded PA State Grant to Empower Young Women in STEM Education

Reading, PA – The Reading Science Center proudly announces it has received a $25,000 state grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education in support of their program, Sisters in STEM (SIS).

The Sisters in STEM after school program was established in 2020 with the goals of breaking societal stereotypes and igniting a genuine curiosity for science among girls. The after school program is offered for free to girls in grades four through six.

SIS offers a comprehensive experience, combining weekly explorations of STEM exhibits with engaging science lessons led by educators. Additionally, the program invites female guest speakers from the scientific community, presenting the girls with role models for their potential future careers. Field trips are organized once a semester to local organizations to allow the girls to witness real-world applications of science.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SIS experienced remarkable growth. What started with an inaugural cohort of eight girls transformed into 35 by its third year, showcasing its success and resonance within the community.

SIS directly furthers the Reading Science Center’s mission of fostering a love for science through immersive STEM education, thereby addressing the shortage of individuals pursuing careers in the sciences. The program aims to prepare young women for these roles, encouraging their contribution to future economic development.

Acknowledging the vital support from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Reading Science Center extends heartfelt gratitude to Representative Mark Rozzi for his instrumental role in securing the $25,000 grant. Representative Rozzi commented:

“Though the Center falls outside of my legislative district, I immediately recognized the impact that the Science Center was having on youth from all over the County and I was able to secure $25,000 to help the Center in their efforts moving forward. I truly hope that all local school districts make it a priority to bring their students to the Reading Science Center!”

The Reading Science Center provides the Greater Reading community with science experiences and educational programming. Through interactive exhibits, field trips, and outreach programs, the Center aims to ignite a lifelong love for science in learners of all ages.
